Beyond SEO

I have just read a very interesting article about SEO vs other key factors of a website and it articulated extremely well what we tell all of our internet marketing clients when we are pitching for new business or when we are appointed to increase the profitability and lead generation of their website.

Too many people focus solely on positions, front page, above the fold, positions 1 to 3, but to be honest is this the first thing that should be addressed? The answer is no. We need to review many different on-site elements first. Of course high positions in the organic search results are very important to bring in visitors but what if other elements are not right?

Imagine owning a shop in a very busy commercial centre but your windows are darkened, there is a tatty old shop sign with letters mssing. Once inside the shop there are no prices on any of the items for sale and there are no sales staff on hand to help. Even if there was a huge promotion doubling the number of people visiting the commercial centre, do you really think people would buy from your shop.

How your website looks and functions is key to being successful on the Internet. You need to appear trustworthy so that people want to do business with you. Credibility is the important factor here, without it you are just helping your competitors to take your potential clients.
You need to ensure that your site has a clear and has a defined brand and logo and that your content is well written and descriptive.

Calls to Actions
OK we are now assuming that your website looks superb and the SEO has kicked in and you are receiving lots of new visitors. What next?

Well ideally you want leads. So do you have a lead capture form? Do you have your phone number on your website (not just the contact page).

Research has shown that the top right of the web page is the best place for a phone number.

With your lead capture forms (assuming they are present), is it clear what they are for?

I think what we are trying to get across is that the website needs to be user friendly, easy to navigate, clear calls to actions, easy to read phone numbers, good branding and excellent content.

Even if you are happy with your search engine positions is your website tired? Does it factor in all of the above points? How well does it convert visitors to leads / contacts?

At Artemis we also work with clients that rank well for many of their keywords but are not satisfied with their conversion rates. We conduct a website review and fix or advise what is required to improve these factors.
